The Music Continues
We have decided not to stop the music, not to stop the beauty and the contribution that art can give even in this period.
In its 17 editions the Festival has involved hundreds of artists, a wide audience, a wonderful city and a territory in a beautiful communitary experience with people of Piedmont as well as those who live far away but year by year have never lost the opportunity to join us in Alba for the Festival.
This year the Festival, because of an unexpected global health crisis, was moved online in its original dates (from May 21st to 31st). All contents were video-recorded in Alba in the previous weeks, and then broadcasted from our website platform, according to a specific time and calendar. The Festival involved 13 different venues in the City of Alba, 80 artists and partners, broadcasting more than 30 events and over 60 hours of videos.
The daily schedule was divided into three sections: mornings with the Educational area (the international composition masterclasses and contents by the local Schools of Music); afternoons with concerts and storytelling, from the Beethoven’s series, to meetings with artists and back-stages; evenings, with the main concerts in different venues of the City, followed by greetings and performances from our friends from all over the world: USA, South Korea, Europe, Kazakhstan and many others.
There were also special events or curiosities, such as the Bruno Murialdo's online photo exhibition on music and territory or recipes dedicated to the Alba Music Festival by Bruno Cingolani, a famous local chef...
Long-standing partnerships with American entities such as Chesapeake Orchestra, River Concert Series, St. Mary's College of Maryland and Roger Williams University promoted the edition overseas. A special night broadcast to facilitate the vision in the US and worldwide.
An important panel of artists was involved, like Bruno Canino, Giuseppe Nova, Gian Luca Pasolini, the Quintet of the Teatro Regio of Turin, the trumpets of the RAI National Symphony Orchestra, Andrea Bacchetti, Armoniosa, the Venice string trio, the harps of the Symphony Orchestra LaVerdi di Milano, Maurizio Fornero, Davide Alogna, Giulio Tampalini, Corradino Piero Giovannini, Sang Eun Kim, Gli Archimedi, Caterina Arzani, Simona Colonna, as well as lecturers like Luigi Giachino, Dino Bosco, Bruno Murialdo, Elena Enrico, Pier Mario Mignone, Paolo Benegiamo, Bruno Cingolani, Ico Turra.
International artists presented to the audience their own video-recordings as well as describing their relation with the Festival; artsits such as Jeff Silberschlag from Maryland, USA, Kevin Zhu from Cupertino in California (First Prize of the Paganini International Competition), the pianist Elisso Bolkvadze from Paris (UNESCO Artist for peace), Josè Cueto and Nancy Roldan from Baltimore, Aiman Mussakhajayeva (international soloist and Provost of the Kazakh National University of Arts) from Nur-Sultan, capital of Kazakhstan, the award-winner American pianist Brian Ganz from Annapolis, Elisso Gogibedaschwili from Austria, Jeffrey Chappell, Larry and Olivia Vote from Maryland, Thierry Perrout (Director of the French Montbéliard Conservatory), Pavel Ionescu (Superintendent of the Romanian State Symphony Orchestra), and the brothers Zachary Silberschlag (Solo trumpet of the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra) from Honolulu and Nathaniel Silberschlag (Solo horn of the Cleveland Orchestra), who have been attending Alba Music Festival since its very first edition.
Evening concerts were introduced by greetings from the local authorities: Alberto Cirio, President of Regione Piemonte, Vittoria Poggio, Cultural Attaché of the Regione Piemonte, Carlotta Boffa, Cultural Attaché of the City of Alba, Roberto Cerrato, UNESCO National Commission, Mauro Carbone, Director of Langhe Monferrato Roero Tourist Board, Liliana Allena, President of International Alba White Truffle Fair, Elisabetta Grasso, Director of Langhe Monferrato Roero Tourist Consortium, Ezio Porro, President of Alba Rotary Club, Gianfranco Garau, Vice President of Enoteca Regionale Piemontese Cavour.
The concerts were an opportunity to admire the city of Alba in a different way and to create the basis for future visits, with video footage, also through drones, which emphasized the venues and the deep artistic connection between music and history. The main venues of the city were brought together, such as San Domenico Church, San Giuseppe Church, San Lorenzo Cathedral, San Giovanni Church, the Choir of Maddalena Church, but also unusual venues not raccessible to the public, such as the historic cellars Pio Cesare, or the archaeological Alba underground and the Diocesan Museum to discover the Roman city, and also the Palazzo Banca d'Alba, the Aganahuei art space, the Carpediem space, without forgetting a tribute to the UNESCO landscapes with the UNESCO site of Grinzane Cavour Castle.
Art and culture are necessary and fundamental values that cannot be stopped. Even if in an alternative way, the Festival was the celebration of art and culture, of the artists and the audience, of the city and of the territory, of supporters and everybody who built it.
