Announcing the sixth edition of Musica Meravigliosa, an annual concert series featuring a weekend-long, in-depth exploration of a specific musical theme.
This years concerts will pay homage to the bicentennial of the birth of Franz Liszt. The Chiesa di San Giuseppe in Alba, known for its excellent acoustics in addition to the beauty of the church itself, will host four concerts, each highlighting a different aspect of Lizsts life and work.
The series opens Friday, November 25 at 9pm, with pianist Marco Pasini and one of the signature bodies of work in the piano repertoire, the Transcendental Etudesthe ultimate test of many a pianist, as much for technical virtuosity as for the interpretive maturity they demand.
The second concert, to be held Saturday, November 26 at 9pm, features violinist Francesco De Angelis, concertmaster of the Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala, with pianist Lorena Portalupi. The duo will explore Lizsts works in the context of his contemporaries, passing from Robert Schumann to Clara Wieck Schumann, Brahms, and finally Liszt himself.
The series concludes with a pair of concerts on Sunday, November 27. The first, at 11am with pianist Maria Gloria Ferrari, presents several of Liszts lesser-known pieces alongside masterworks including the Années de pèlerinage (Years of Pilgrimage). The second, at 5pm, features piano duo Chiara Nicora and Ferdinando Baroffio playing Liszts Festklänge, followed by a transcription of Beethovens magnificent Fifth Symphony arranged by renowned piano pedagogue Franz Czerny, a student of Beethovens who later taught Liszt.
